Apple Cider Vinegar For Constipation
At one point or another, everyone experiences a terrible bout of constipation. Rather than turning to harsh OTC medications that can leave you bed ridden with stomach cramps while your gut works everything out, why not try a natural, home-based solution?
In this article, we’re going to explore using apple cider vinegar (ACV) to alleviate constipation without the help of popular OTC medications.
What is Apple Cider Vinegar?
Apple cider vinegar (also known as ACV) is a type of vinegar that’s packed with medicinal properties. In fact, apple cider vinegar has been used for centuries to cure various health and physiological problems.
Consisting of nothing more than fermented apple juice, ACV is made by adding yeast to pure apple juice and allowing it to ferment. Once the alcohol has been converted into acetic acid (the culprit behind ACVs strong odor and taste), fermentation is compete and it’s ready to go.
The finished product, now with far less sugar and calories than the sweet apple juice it started off as, is packed with probiotics and beneficial enzymes. In fact, apple cider vinegar is so healthy that it only takes two tablespoons to begin enjoying the benefits.
Apple Cider Vinegar & Constipation
In addition to the dozens of other home remedy uses ACV has, in recent years, it’s been gaining popularity as a go-to natural constipation reliever.
Though there still needs to be extensive research done on the topic, many believe that the high level of acidity acts as a natural laxative by stimulating the colon into peristalsis (muscle contractions that move waste through the colon).
Because most cases of constipation are brought on by a lack of fiber in the diet, apple cider vinegar’s high concentration of pectin, a water-soluble dietary fiber, is believed to help improve digestion. Once the constipation has past, pectin from ACV will help make sure the digestive system and colon are running smooth.
Lastly, apple cider vinegar is also found to contain small amounts of magnesium, an essential mineral that helps promote regular bowel movements. Between all three of these factors, many have experienced success when using apple cider vinegar to alleviate constipation.
